  1. Welcome to the Myst 1.0 README file

  4. This file contains technical information regarding sound cards, 
  5. video cards, display drivers, memory, and any known hardware 
  6. incompatibilities.  Please read this file in its entirety before 
  7. contacting Broderbund Technical Support.

  9. SOUND CARDS
  10. -----------
  11. Myst takes full advantage of the software volume control features 
  12. available on MPC sound cards.  Consequently, it is essential that
  13. you review the following information to see if your sound device is 
  14. affected:

  18. Pro Audio Spectrum 16 owners 
  19. ---------------------------- 
  20. Make sure that you have updated to the most recent PAS 16 drivers. 
  21.  
  22. Also make sure that the "MVSound.sys" line in your config.sys file 
  23. includes these arguments in addition to any others:

  29. Pro Audio Spectrum + owners

  32. In the directory on your hard drive where you installed Myst,
  33. you'll find a file called "Myst.ini".  Open it up using a 
  34. plain-text editor such as "Notepad" (provided with Windows) and
  35. add the line:

  41. All sound cards with software volume control 
  42. --------------------------------------------

  44. If volume output is set very low in your autoexec.bat file or in  
  45. your mixer application, Myst might be quite loud in comparison to  
  46. other applications.  This is because Myst takes full advantage of  
  47. software volume control within the game.  You may want to adjust 
  48. your speaker output to accommodate this increased volume.

  52. MEMORY

  55. Myst is designed to use the full capabilities of your computer.  
  56. It is highly recommended that you do not use other programs (or keep 
  57. other program windows open) while playing Myst.  In addition, the 
  58. performance of Myst may vary according to the capabilities of your 
  59. CD-ROM drive (as well as your other hardware).
  60.  
  61. For Myst to function properly we recommend that  Windows  have a total 
  62. of 10,000 KB of free memory.  This amount may be a combination of 
  63. physical and virtual memory.  To check the amount of free memory
  64. currently available to Windows, begin at the Windows Program Manager.  
  65. Select "About Program Manager" from the "Help" menu.  At the bottom of 
  66. the information box will be a line titled "Memory" which will show 
  67. the amount free memory (in KB) available to Windows.  
  68.  
  69. If the total memory available to Windows is less than 10,000 KB try 
  70. increasing the size of the Windows swap file (virtual memory).  
  71. To increase the size of the Windows swap file follow these steps:
  72.  
  73.      1.  Begin at the Windows Program Manager.  Open the "Control Panel" 
  74.          icon, located in the "Main" program group.
  75.  
  76.      2.  Double click on the icon named "386 Enhanced."  
  77.  
  78.      3.  Click on the button labeled "Virtual Memory . . ."  
  79.  
  80.      4.  Click on the button labeled "Change."  A "New Settings" dialog 
  81.          box will open.
  82.  
  83.      5.  Increase the size of your swap file in the "New Size" dialog box. 
  84.          Click OK.
  85.  
  86.      6.  A dialog box will appear asking if you would like to restart 
  87.          Windows.  Click "Restart Windows."

  90. VIDEO CARDS AND DISPLAY DRIVERS

  93. If you are experiencing video problems while playing Myst then try 
  94. updating to a more recent version of your display driver.  
  95.  
  96. Microsoft SVGA driver 
  97. ---------------------
  98.  
  99. If you are using the Microsoft SVGA driver and the menu bar does not
  100. completely hide then try using the driver that came with your video card.

  103. HeadLand SVGA Card
  104. -------------------

  106. If you are using the HeadLand SVGA local bus video card and are 
  107. experiencing problems with QuickTime movies not being placed correctly
  108. on the screen try updating to the most recent version of your display 
  109. driver.

  111. Also try making the following adjustments to your QTW.INI file, located
  112. in your \WINDOWS directory:

  114. If there is a line labeled:

  118. then change it to read:

  122. If neither of the above lines exist then add the following lines:

  130. ATI Mach 32 Driver
  131. ------------------

  133. Users of the ATI Mach 32 driver should update to the newest version 
  134. of the driver.  Broderbund has successfully tested Myst with version 2.2.

  137. MISCELLANEOUS

  140. COREL SCSI!
  141. -----------

  143. If you are encountering problems installing or running Myst while using
  144. COREL SCSI! try updating to the most recent drivers.
